     COMPANY HISTORY

If you have ever passed through central Alabama on I-65, chances are you will remember the Peach water tower in Clanton.  You may have even made a pit stop at Peach Park, Durbin Farms Market, or one of the many other local fruit and vegetable markets for some peaches.  After all, Chilton County peaches are considered some of the best peaches grown in the south.  The peach industry in Chilton County was the original inspiration for the creation of our company.

Back in 1941 Lonnie Cobb established a peach basket company in Jemison, which is about 10 miles north of Clanton.  For more than 30 years he provided these baskets to the local peach farmers.  All of these baskets were hand made from Poplar trees harvested from creeks and swamps in the surrounding area.  By 1971 the company provided peach baskets to farmers all over central Alabama.

In 1971 it was time for a change.  Bonny Smith, a local resident born and raised in Clanton, bought the company and Jemison Basket Inc. was established.  At that time, the only products made were 4 quart, 8 quart, and 12 quart peach baskets, still all made by hand.  Later in the 70s, as the floral industry grew, the company began to make many different types of baskets for both live and artificial flowers, again, all made by hand.  This carried on through the 80s and early 90s.

In the mid-80s, the company began testing the waters on wooden crates and displays, while continuing to make the peach and flower baskets.  The company moved to Clanton and began operating under the name Specialty Wood Products in the mid-80s.  During this time, the crates and displays that were made were specifically designed with the floral industry in mind.  In the early 90s we began making different types of products designed for the gift and retail industries.

Changes in the markets in the 90s caused both the peach basket and flower basket industries to decline.  We finally stopped making these types of baskets in 2005.  However, the growth of the company in the retail industry was increasing rapidly.  Many of the items that were being made 20 years ago are still made today.  The 90s also brought the company into the custom display industry.  We began offering many different types of wooden displays and fixtures that are specifically designed for a purpose within the retail industry.

In 2018, it came time to pass the company to the next generation.  After operating under the names Jemison Basket, Inc. for more than 45 years and Specialty Wood Products for more than 30 years, it was again time for a change.  Specwood Products, Inc. was established on January 1st. 2019.  The name may have changed, but the company did not change.  We still strive to offer low cost and reliable wooden displays and crates to the retail industry, along with a few baskets that are still hand made in the USA.

Because we make all of our products on site, we can offer flexibility and speed in our manufacturing process.  We are not a one stop shop for all things wood, but we do offer quality wooden products at competitive prices.  If you are looking for just a few displays or crates, the items pictured on this site will hopefully meet your needs.  If you are looking for larger quantities, anywhere from 100 to 5,000 and beyond, we will be glad to work with you to see if we can help.  Give us a call today!

This is a photo of part of the crew back in the late 70s.  One of them still works here!
